Troops in China have begun the difficult task of burying the dead following Monday’s 7.9 earthquake in China.
After more than four days since the quake rocked the Sichuan province, the decomposing bodies have begun to pose a health risk for the survivors, prompting officials to shift efforts away from rescue and move quickly towards recovery and burial.
Mass graves have been dug for the thousands killed. Photographs taken of each body, along with hair and skin samples, will hopefully provide for an eventual identification.
Instructions on burial procedures were announced over a special radio channel that has been devoted to the disaster.
The official death toll stood at more than 22,000 yesterday, with more than 14,000 still missing in Sichuan province.
