President Leonel Fernandez has won a third term as the Dominican Republic leader after his main opponent, social Democrat leader Miguel Vargas Maldonado, conceded defeat after 30 percent of the vote had been counted.
Maldonado conceded after nearly one million votes had been counted.
Fernandez had served as president from 1996 to 2000 but a Dominican law prevented him from running for a second term. That law was later rescinded and the Dominican Liberation Party leader ran again in 2004 and took office for the second time.
He has pledged to address the address poverty in the island as well as tackle the 16 percent unemployment rate.
