An Afghani journalist student who was sentenced to death for insulting Islam has told an appeals court that his previous confession was made under torture and that he was innocent of the charges.
In January Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh was sentenced to death for blasphemy after asking his professor questions about the rights of women under Islam. Kambakhsh was also found guilty of distributing articles about the subject, something the 24-year-old now denies.
The case has reached an appeals court where Kambakhsh has renounced his earlier confession, claiming it was only made because he was being tortured. The case was adjourned for a week to give him time to prepare for his defense.
