The growing animosity towards immigrants in Johannesburg, South Africa turned violent on Sunday, leaving at least six people dead and more than 50 left injured as armed men shot and stabbed foreigners while burning down their homes and shops.
South Africa has seen a dramatic rise in its immigrant population over the past decade and many native South Africans have blamed the influx for high unemployment, crime and a shortage of housing.
On Sunday that anger boiled over in Cleveland, a suburb of Johannesburg, as immigrants were sent running to the local police station for protection yet several were attacked there as well.
