China Announces Three Days of Mourning for Victims of Earthquake

China has announced there will be three days of mourning in remembrance of the tens of thousands killed in the magnitude-7.9 earthquake that devastated the Sichuan province one week ago.

The death toll from Monday’s quake has risen to 32,477 but that number is continuing to climb with some saying it could be as many as 50,000 dead. Rescue workers have continued to find survivors but the numbers are falling and the likelihood that they will turn to recovery is fast approaching.

More than 10,000 people are still believed to be buried under buildings, schools and homes and China has estimated more than 220,000 were injured form the quake.

The three day period will begin at 0628 GMT on Monday, one week after the quake struck.
