A criminal court in Iraq has sentenced Ahmed Ali Ahmed, known as Abu Omar, to death for the killing of Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho nearly three months ago.
Omar is a known leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and was convicted of orchestrating the attack on the Archbishop last February in which Rahho’s driver was killed along with his two bodyguards.
Rahho, 65, was believed to be captured and authorities found his body in a shallow grave two weeks after the attack. Rahho was a leading figure in the Chaldean Catholic faith inside Iraq, the Chaldeans are Iraq’s largest sect within the country’s Christian community.
