There are also 240 miles of dazzling roads around the mountain. However, climbing to the top of the mountain is only advisable to experienced mountain climbers with all the necessary equipment.
Washington has two other national parks, Olympic National Park and North Cascades National Park, both of which make for some specatcular hiking and sightseeing. Located in the Olympic Peninsula, Olympic National Park is home to the largest herd of wild elk in the United States. The three-mile Hurricane Hill Trail offers superb views of much of the surrounding area, including Vancouver Island. North Cascades National Park offers 400 miles of beautiful hiking trails as well as the incredibly scenic 350-mile Cascade Loop drive.
Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument was established in 1982, just two years following the volcano's violent eruption. The land surrounding the mountain was set aside for recreation, research, and education. Visitors are given the opportunity to look inside the crater from the Johnson Ridge Observatory. Daring mountain climbers can also climb to the top of the volcano.
