Despite mounting criticism from human rights organizations Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has promised next month’s elections will be fair, providing voters the “freedom to decide.”
That freedom has been in question as several accuse Kagame of promoting violence against opposition parties. While Kagame has denied any involvement in the violence the evidence appears to support the opposition‘s claims. On Tuesday the opposition Democratic Green Party will be burying its vice president, Andre Kagwa Rwisereka, who was found nearly decapitated.
Political foes have not been the only victims as an outspoken journalist has also been murdered and a former military general was the target of an assassination attempt.
Those attacks have led United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to call for a full investigation to determine if they were politically motivated.
Kagame, who captured 90 percent of the vote to win his first seven-year term, is widely expected to win his second term when the polls open on August 8.
