President Barack Obama Meeting with British PM David Cameron

U.S. President Barack Obama will be meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday to discuss a variety of issues including the global economy, Afghanistan and the BP oil leak. Cameron will also be meeting with four senators to discuss the early release of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, the man found guilty of orchestrating the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

While Cameron would like to focus on the first three issues he will likely find himself having to dedicate a considerable amount of time on the Lockerbie issue. Cameron has said he believed al-Megrahi “should have died in jail” but it was ultimately the Scottish government that ruled he should be returned to Libya on compassionate grounds.

Making matters more complicated are the accusations that BP had a hand in freeing al-Megrahi. BP has admitted lobbying for the British government to agree to a wider prisoner transfer in 2007 but has insisted they played no role in Scotland’s decision to free the bomber.

Cameron has said he would like his meeting with Obama to focus on the most pressing matters at hand, an agenda he believes he shares with the U.S. leader. The British PM outlined that agenda in a Wall Street Journal article “succeeding in Afghanistan, securing economic growth and stability at home and across the world, fighting protectionism.”
