Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced that his country will begin construction on a new spaceport, a venture that is expected to be completed by 2015 and come at a cost of just over $800 million.
Putin said the new spaceport, known as the Vostochny cosmodrome, would be built near the town of Uglegorsk located in the Far Eastern Amur region near the border with China.
The new spaceport will mainly serve to accommodate civilian launches and should ease the dependence on the Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan, the oldest space launch facility in the world. Russia currently rents that site from Kazakhstan.
Along with civilian space launches the new Vostochny cosmodrome will house a high-tech residential compound as well as research laboratories.
