JaMarcus Russell Pleads Not Guilty on Charge Tied to Illegal Drug Possession

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has entered a not guilty plea in an Alabama courtroom following charges tied to illegal drug possession.

Russell, 24, was arrested on July 5 after an undercover investigation found the former LSU star to be in possession of codeine syrup without a prescription. Codeine syrup is considered a controlled substance.

The No. 1 selection in the 2007 NFL Draft has found the professional ranks much tougher than his days with the Tigers. Russell is now considered one of the biggest busts in NFL history, having completed just 52.1 percent of his passes and tossing 23 interceptions while losing 15 fumbles.

In May the Raiders cut ties with Russell after paying him more than $36 million over three years.
