In what he described as a move towards reconciliation Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for the release of his supporters who were arrested during the violent elections held earlier this year.
Several hundred people were arrested during the fierce election campaign that resulted in more than 1,500 deaths. In the end Odinga was named prime minister as part of a power-sharing deal that kept President Mwai Kibaki as head of the country.
Now Odinga wants amnesty to be granted to those supporters of his who had been arrested but many Kenyans have rejected that plea saying such a move would only encourage future violence.
The majority of the violence during the election period involved ethnic Kalenjins loyal to Odinga and Kibaki’s Kikuyu community.
