A photographer for a local newspaper in Provo, Utah was speared through the leg on Saturday while covering the state’s high school track championship.
Ryan McGeeney had been covering the discus event when he apparently strayed into an off-limits area that was part of the javelin event. A moment later McGeeney was taking photos of a javelin lodged through his leg just below his knee.
Medical response teams cut most of the javelin away at the scene before transporting McGeeney to a hospital where he had the rest of the javelin removed. He then received 13 stitches.
Anthony Miles, the athlete who threw the javelin, went on to win the 4A state title.
