FARC Commander Surrenders

The 45-year old commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia surrendered in Bogota on Monday, and called for peace in Colombia.

Known as Karina within the FARC, Nelly Avila Moreno, along with a longtime male companion, abandoned the group saying she was motivated by a desire to reunite with her family and to start a dialogue that would lead to an end to the violence in her country.

The chief of the Colombian army urged other members of the guerilla forces to follow Moreno’s lead, saying he wanted them to surrender peacefully.

More than 45 members of the FARC have surrendered since the death of Ivan Rios, one of the group’s central high command.
