New Taiwan President Takes Office

57-year-old Ma Ying-jeou was inaugurated Tuesday as the president of Taiwan.

The change in leadership leads many to believe that long-standing frictions between Beijing and Taiwan could begin to heal.

During his inaugural address, Ma called for peace and prosperity for China and Taiwan. He has vowed to not to seek independence from, or unification with, the mainland of China.

After more than 59 years of de facto independence, Taiwan has a strong high-tech economy that can only be strengthened by improved relations with Beijing.

Ma’s pro-economic policies lead many to hope for the rebuilding of Taiwan’s alliance with China.
