More than six million children in Ethiopia are at risk from severe malnutrition, according to UNICEF. Of those, more than 120,000 have only a month to live.
A severe drought coupled with rising world food prices have created a food crisis that has left thousands of children extremely malnourished and claimed the lives of many more.
The U.N. World Food Programme,, which supplies the emergency food for UNICEF, estimates huge numbers of Ethiopia’s 80 million people will need food relief in the coming months.
In recent years, Ethiopia had been praised for its efforts in child welfare, having lowered its infant mortality rate dramatically while increasing public awareness of health concerns.
