Myanmar Agrees to Let UN Helicopters in to Areas Devastated by Cyclone Nargis

The ruling military junta in Myanmar agreed Tuesday to allow United Nations helicopters into some of the country’s most devastated areas following Cyclone Nargis.

More than two weeks after the tropical cyclone killed tens of thousands and left many more without clean water, food or shelter in the Irrawaddy Delta, nine UN helicopters will be allowed in to the area.

UN officials will tour the areas hardest hit by the cyclone while aid workers begin to make their way to the region. The military junta is expected to expedite visas for those relief workers.
