U.S. to Impose New Sanctions Against North Korea

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said there will be new sanctions imposed against North Korea, a move that she said was done to “prevent North Korea's proliferation, to halt their illicit activities that help fund their weapons programs, and to discourage further provocative actions.”

The U.S. sanctions follow an international finding that blamed North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors. While North Korea continues to deny any involvement the evidence gathered clearly supports the accusations and is seen as the major reason for the new U.S. sanctions being put in place.

Those sanctions will target the sale and purchase of arms as well as the importing of luxury goods.

Clinton was quick to point out that the sanctions were not meant to penalize the North Korean people but rather the government which continues to defy international orders. While North Korea is already subject to a number of international sanctions they recently stated that any new sanctions would be seen as an act of war and they would react strongly.
