Burma has begun to open its doors to humanitarian aid nearly three weeks after Cyclone Nargis ravaged the Irrawaddy Delta and left more than 75,000 dead and an additional 55,000 missing.
Now the country’s top leader, Gen. Than Shwe, has agreed to meet with United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon on Friday to discuss possible large scale relief efforts, something the Burmese military junta has thwarted thus far.
In a statement to journalists Ban confirmed, “I want to see the conditions under which relief teams are working, and I intend to do all I can to reinforce their efforts, in co-ordination with the Myanmar [Burma] authorities and international aid agencies.”
