Despite frustration with their previous peace talks Israel and Syria have agreed to continue discussions and allow Turkish mediators to play a role in the affairs.
Israel and Syria have been at odds since 1967 when Israel captured the Golan Heights. Syria has since demanded the return of the land yet Israelis have populated the territory and have expressed an unwillingness to withdraw back to the armistice line.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Ohlmert has confirmed that both sides have continued talks and Syria’s government noted both sides “expressed their desire to conduct the talks in goodwill and decided to continue dialogue with seriousness to achieve comprehensive peace.”
At the heart of the talks for Syria is the Golan Heights while Israel wants Syria to sever its ties with Iran as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon.
