Aboriginal Activists Arrested While Protesting Kangaroo Killings

Australian police arrested eight aboriginal activists Wednesday as they protested the killings of some 400 kangaroos on an abandoned military site in Canberra.

The protesters, who were charged with trespassing when they climbed a fence onto government property, were up in arms over the mass killings of an animal considered to be sacred among Australia’s indigenous people. Protest leaders plan to seek a court order to prevent the slaughter of any more kangaroos while they fight the charges.

An overabundance of Australia’s most beloved animals has led authorities there to begin to cull 400 kangaroos from a population of more than 600 living on the abandoned military site. The huge numbers of the kangaroo population had begun to destroy the grassland habitats of other species, including several rare lizards.

The Defense Department had originally planned to ship the animals to a remote forest, but that proposal proved too costly.
