Senator Edward Kennedy Released from Boston Hospital Wednesday

Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy was released from the hospital on Wednesday morning after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Kennedy, 76, was hospitalized Saturday morning after suffering a seizure at his family's compound at Hyannisport, Massachusetts. Kennedy was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital.

On Tuesday, doctors diagnosed him with malignant glioma in the parietal lobe on the left side of his brain, a cancer that often carries an unhealthy prognosis.

The prescribed remedies for the glioma are combinations of various forms of radiation and chemotherapy.

Malignant glioma is the most common form of brain cancer, accounting for about 9,000 cases diagnosed each year in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. They are more common in older people, especially those between the ages of 75 and 84, according to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout the weekend and during his release on Wednesday, he was accompanied by his wife Victoria Reggie "Vicki" Kennedy; his sister Jean; his daughter, Kara Kennedy Allen; and his sons, Edward "Ted" Kennedy Jr. and U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.)

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts as a senator since 1962. He is one of only six senators in U.S. history to serve more than 40 years.

Kennedy is the youngest brother of former President John F. Kennedy and former Senator Robert F. Kennedy, both of which were killed in assassinations. As the youngest of nine children, Kennedy is the last-surviving brother in the storied Kennedy family.
