Garbage Crisis in Naples at top of Agenda for Berlusconi

More than 3,000 tons of garbage still remained on the streets of Naples as Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi arrived in the city Wednesday for a Cabinet meeting.

The garbage crisis in the once beautiful southern city has waged on since December when area trash dumps reached capacity.

It was estimated that 50,000 tons of garbage remained to be collected in the Campania region surrounding Naples.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, who was re-elected for a third term last month, vowed to return Naples to cleanliness and order.

For 15 years, Naples has faced the recurring problem of garbage disposal as a result of government inadequacies, environmental opposition to new dump sites, and the criminal interests of the Camorra mafia.
