Myanmar Sets Up Orphanages Following Cyclone Nargis

The ruling military junta in Myanmar plans to set up orphanages for children whose parents were killed in the cyclone that struck the region more than two weeks ago.

A representative for UNICEF estimated the number of children left without guardians to be more than 600 and rising.

Myanmar’s social welfare department and the Red Cross of Myanmar were working with UNICEF to identify any unaccompanied minors with the hope of tracking any surviving relatives.

Those children who have been orphaned or separated from family are living in crowded refugee camps and are at risk of being victimized by human traffickers or sexual predators.

Foreign adoptions are not permitted in Myanmar.
