South Africa President Thabo Mbeki has approved an order that will deploy the country’s army into the areas around Johannesburg and neighboring cities as a method of ending the violent attacks launched against immigrants.
Since last week more than 20 immigrants have been killed, several hundred injured, and tens of thousands displaced as large gangs have targeted the foreigners, blaming them for unemployment, high prices and crime.
Many of the immigrants in South Africa are from neighboring Zimbabwe as well as Nigeria. Police have resorted to using rubber bullets to stop roving mobs searching for foreigners.
