‘Canadian Food’ Label Rules Tightened

Foods marketed as a Canadian product must meet new labeling rules, according to an announcement by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In the first change to food labels since the 1980s, two categories of products will face stricter regulations.

Foods listed as a “Product of Canada” must now contain all or virtually all contents that are from Canada.

Products labeled “Made in Canada” must have a majority of its ingredients processed in the country.

Harper also introduced a new label which will read, “Made in Canada with imported ingredients” so that Canadians will know exactly what kind of product they are getting.

No information was available on when the new labeling restrictions will take effect.
