Work at BP Oil Spill Site in Gulf of Mexico Halted as Threats of Cyclone in Area Loom

With the National Hurricane Center predicting with near certainty that a cyclone will form over the Bahamas a decision has been made to begin evacuating BP workers in the Gulf of Mexico, halting their work on a relief well.

According to reports the work could be suspended for up to two weeks as the storm continues to develop. While the path of that storm remains uncertain the vessels around the ruptured oil well are slow-moving, making evacuation at this time necessary.

Now BP will have to decide if they will leave the cap on the ruptured well. The cap has been in place for days as BP continues integrity tests and while the results have been favorable up to this point there is no telling what could happen if the storm passes over the area.

BP has been facing mounting pressure to seal the well which was ruptured on April 20 following an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. That explosion killed eleven oil workers and has led to what is considered the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.
