Fear of the Future for High School Students

Most teens today are fearful of the future. In a study with Japanese high school students 79 percent think a nuclear war will be fought somewhere in the world in the future.

While these are challenging times for adults, many teens are feeling even more despondent, which can affect their school performance, their relationships, event their hopes and dreams.

SuperCamp, one of the world’s foremost summer enrichment programs and a leader in the area of student motivation, is addressing this concerning trend among teens this summer.

All of its seven-day and ten-day pre-teen and teen summer camps include training by skilled facilitators on character development and life skills, two areas that help provide participants with a more positive outlook and an awareness that they are in control of their future.

The academic summer camps provide learning skills training, as well, covering such areas as advanced reading skills, creative writing, critical thinking, problem solving, test-taking techniques and study strategies.

The life skills portion of the academic programs address goal setting, leadership, communication and other interpersonal skills. In addition, students learn the 8 Keys of Excellence, a character-development program that teaches such important traits as ownership, speaking with good purpose, living in the now, and commitment.

SuperCamp has helped over 55,000 middle school and high school students since launching in 1982. The co-founder and president of the program is Bobbi DePorter, who is a pioneer in accelerated learning methods.

Ms. DePorter has committed much of her adult life to the area of youth achievement. Through her non-profit organization, Learning Forum International, she is about to introduce an initiative that will bring the 8 Keys of Excellence to schools nationwide.
