Toxic Fume Suicide Sickens 54 Others in Japan

A man who vomited after drinking pesticide to commit suicide sickened 54 people at a hospital in southern Japan Wednesday.

Of the people who were sickened at the hospital in Kumamoto, eleven were doctors and 20 were staff workers.  The emergency room of the hospital was shut down for 12 hours.

It was determined the 34-year old man drank chloropicrin, a liquid pesticide used during World War I to produce tear gas.

The man’s death was the latest in a series of toxic fume suicides to hit Japan, a country that has long battled an alarmingly high suicide rate.
