In just a matter of hours the Northern California fires that scorched 100 acres of the Santa Cruz Mountains has continued to feed off the dry fuel supply of trees and shrubs and has now consumed more than 700 acres and led to evacuations in the area.
Called the Summit Fires, several hundred homes, schools and buildings are within range of the fire that has continued to grow uncontrolled.
The fires are about 70 miles south of San Francisco and began shortly after 5:30 a.m. Pacific time. Sustained winds have been marked at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
