General David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, has said that he would likely recommend a reduction in troops by September but would not say how many of the U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq would be affected.
The United States has approximately 155,000 troops in Iraq but by July that will be down to about 140,000 after the current withdrawals are complete. The additional reductions, if they take place, will follow a 45-day assessment period following the completion of the initial withdrawals.
Petraeus is scheduled to leave his current post in September after being nominated for the position of head of US Central Command.
Speaking before a Senate panel Petraeus stated about the September timeline, “My sense is that I will be able to make a recommendation at that time for some further reductions.”
