More than 1000 acres have burned along the Santa Cruz Mountain Range in what is being called the Summit Fires and firefighters have yet to contain the blaze that now threatens hundreds of homes and stores along Highway 17 in Northern California.
Evacuations have been ordered for several schools and many homeowners have been forced out of their houses and several businesses have closed as precautionary measures have begun.
The fires are currently burning near Gilroy, about 70 miles south of San Francisco. Officials received a call around 5:30 a.m. notifying them of the fire and since that time the 20-30 mph sustained winds have pushed the inferno across a large stretch of land in a short period of time.
