Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Accuses US of Spying

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused the United States of using an anti-drug mission for reconnaissance purposes.

Chavez made the accusations Wednesday after a U.S. Navy plane strayed into Venezuelan airspace during a reported counter-drug raid.

In a televised speech about the incident, Chavez said, “They are spying, even testing our capacity to react.” He indicated Venezuela would respond to the violation and claimed combat jets were “starting their engines.”

Tensions between the two countries were already strained following recent claims that the United States uncovered documents implicating the Venezuelan government in financing and arming the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
