Summit Fires Razes 2,000 Acres in Northern California, Continues Uncontained

In what has been labeled the Summit Fires, the blaze that has engulfed more than 2,000 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California continues to move uncontained.

Firefighters have been trying to battle the wildfire for several hours now but strong winds that have been clocked at 20-30 mph along with gusts nearing 40 mph have made the fire unpredictable. In an attempt to stop the push of the fire authorities have tried to drop flame retardant from a plane but it has had little effect on the fire.

Power has now been cut around the area to prevent further fires from igniting as power lines go down and lines are snapped.

Several children attending camps in the area have been evacuated.

The fires are currently burning near Gilroy, about 70 miles south of San Francisco. Officials received a call around 5:30 a.m. notifying them of the fire and since that time the 20-30 mph sustained winds have pushed the inferno across a large stretch of land in a short period of time.
