Death Toll in China Quake Tops 51,000

More than 51,000 have been confirmed dead in China following last week’s powerful earthquake.

Government officials estimate that another 29,000 people are still missing and more than 5 million people have been left homeless.

International aid has been requested to supply more than 3 million tents, while President Hu Jintao has asked Chinese tent manufacturing companies to increase production.

In addition to those left homeless, more than 4,000 children have been orphaned, prompting hundreds of calls to the government from people wanting to adopt them.
