4,000 Children Orphaned in China Quake

More than 4,000 children have been orphaned in China following last week’s deadly 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

Officials warn the numbers of children believed to be orphaned could change due to the huge numbers of people still missing.

Top priority has been given to reuniting the children with parents or family members. Newspapers have printed pictures of children and posters with children’s photos and names of have been distributed in relief camps.

While the Chinese government has been inundated with calls from people wanting to adopt children left orphaned by the earthquake, officials say the adoption process can’t begin until areas affected by the quake have been returned to order.

The quake that struck the Sichuan province on May 12 has claimed the lives of more than 51,000 and left millions homeless.
