Ban Ki-moon, head of the United Nations, has toured the areas in Burma devastated by Cyclone Nargis and was said to be shocked by the catastrophic conditions he witnessed in the Irrawaddy Delta.
Among those conditions were survivors drinking from puddles along with villages completely destroyed by the May 2 storm that has killed a reported 78,000 people and left another 56,000 missing.
Ban told the Burmese government that they were incapable of handling the relief efforts on their own and pled with the leaders to open their borders to large-scale assistance. The UN leader was sure to point out the issue was now was not blame but rather, “Our focus now is on saving lives.”
That message may be lost on Burmese officials who told Ban earlier that the relief phase was coming to an end and they would be focusing on reconstruction soon.
