South Korea’s president admitted Thursday he was baffled by the spread of rumors of mad cow disease after lifting a ban on imports of U.S. beef.
Lee Myung-baik apologized on national television for not seeking public opinion on the matter and vowed to improve his people’s understanding of the actualities.
South Korea banned imports of U.S. beef five years ago amid concerns over a case of mad cow disease in the United States.
That ban was lifted recently after South Korea and the United States reached a deal that will reopen South Korean markets to U.S. beef products.
The agreement is expected help improve a sluggish Korean economy and provide more than 300,000 jobs.
