Sherpa Breaks Record for Everest Climbs

A veteran mountain guide has scaled the world’s highest peak for the 18th time, breaking a record he set last spring.

Appa, a Sherpa who goes by only one name, reached the summit of Mount Everest on Thursday.

He made his first summit of Everest in 1989, and has been making the 29,035-foot climb almost every year since.

Dozens of other climbers have scaled Everest in the past three days, due in large part to good weather conditions.

Climbing on Mount Everest had been temporarily banned while a Chinese team carried the Olympic torch to the summit.
