Stonehenge was vandalized by two men who attacked the ancient monument with a hammer and screwdriver, breaking off a piece of one megalith and leaving a large scratch along another.
The conservation group English Heritage said the two vandals were spotted almost immediately by security guards, but somehow managed to escape.
While the damage appeared to be slight, the incident at Britain’s best known and least understood landmarks surprised many. The last time the monument suffered damage by vandals was decades ago.
Stonehenge is one of the best preserved prehistoric monuments in the world, dating from before 2000 B.C. The site has been made popular by groups who attach mystical significance to the stones.
