German President to Seek Re-election

German President Horst Kohler announced Thursday his plans to seek re-election. His decision will likely see the government’s ruling coalition parties face off against each other.

As a member of the Christian Democrat party, Kohler announced his decision to seek re-election a year and a day before the vote is to take place. Members of the rival coalition of Social Democrats are expected to announce their own candidate.

Germany’s presidency is a largely ceremonial post that carries a great deal of moral authority. The president’s term is five years and is limited to two terms.
