Santa Cruz Fire Continues to Burn, Additional 700 Firefighters to Battle Blaze

The Santa Cruz fire known as the Summit Fires has entered its second day and the 500-plus firefighters have seen little relief as the blaze has charred more than 3,000 acres with several homes and buildings destroyed.

It was shortly before 5:30 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday that officials learned of the wildfire burning in Northern California, near the Santa Cruz Mountains that separate Santa Cruz and Santa Clara. Over the course of the day the fire moved at will as 20-30 mph sustained winds made it impossible for firefighters to contain.

By the end of the day more than 2,500 acres had been lost, several homes and building engulfed, and mass evacuations of residents. Early this morning reports noted that the total acreage has jumped to 3,000 and could hit 10,000 acres before containment.

An additional 700 firefighters have been called in to help battle the Summit Fires.
