UN Chief Disturbed Over Conditions in Burma

The United Nations chief said he was very upset by the conditions following the tropical cyclone that devastated the Irrawaddy Delta of Burma, also known as Myanmar.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is the only foreign leader to be allowed into the region hardest hit by Cyclone Nargis nearly three weeks ago.

Ban was taken on a four-hour helicopter tour of the disaster area where fields remained flooded, villages and homes leveled, rivers swollen past their banks, and survivors huddled on rooftop or in tents or boats.

In meetings with the ruling military junta, he stressed the need to bring in help to reach survivors who are suffering from disease, hunger and lack of shelter.

And according to a report by the International Red Cross, rivers and ponds in the area hardest hit by the cyclone are full of corpses, while survivors in remote areas have not received any aid.
