Russia and China Sign Billion Dollar Nuclear Cooperation Deal

Russia and China signed a $1 billion nuclear cooperation deal Friday during a visit by new Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The deal calls for Russia to build a $500 million nuclear fuel enrichment plant and supply $500 million in uranium to China’s fast-growing nuclear power industry.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said Medvedev’s visit to China helped to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

“By visiting China on his first trip abroad since taking office, President Medvedev has shown that he attaches a high level of importance to the development of bilateral ties,” Hu said. “I am sure this visit will give impetus to our strategic partnership and take it to a new level.”

The two leaders also signed a joint statement condemning U.S. plans for a global missile defense system and rejected any new arms race in space.
