North Korea Promises “Physical Response” to Joint Military Exercises Being Held by U.S. and South Korea

North Korea has promised a “physical response” to joint military exercises being carried out by the United States and South Korea, calling the weekend drills “a threat to the Korean peninsula and the region of Asia as a whole. And the DPRK's position is clear: there will be a physical response to the threat imposed by the United States militarily.”

Those exercises, set to begin on Sunday, will involve the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, 20 other ships and submarines, 100 aircraft and 8,000 personnel; all of which are aimed at deterring aggression from North Korea.

Pyongyang has accused the U.S. of “gunboat diplomacy” and alleged that the joint military exercises went beyond defensive training.

On Wednesday the United States announced tighter sanctions against North Korea, insisting there had to be a penalty for their actions that led to the sinking of a South Korean warship which left 46 sailors dead. While North Korea has denied any involvement in that March attack the evidence gathered and the findings of a UN investigation clearly point at Pyongyang.
