Ukrainian Coal Mine Explosion Kills 4; Seven Others Missing

An explosion at a Ukrainian coal mine has killed four workers and left seven others missing.

The explosion happened overnight at a mine in the Donetsk region of the Ukraine where about 400 miners were working.

Fourteen coal miners were in the immediate blast area when methane gas and coal exploded. Three miners walked out and are hospitalized.

Ukrainian mines are some of the world’s most dangerous due to outdated equipment and poor safety standards. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, almost 4,300 have died in mining accidents.
