Settlement Reached in Lawsuit over Contaminated Pet Food

More than $24 million will go to pet owners after thousands of cats and dogs became sick or died from pet food contaminated with melamine.

According to settlement papers filed late Thursday, about 30 companies will make the payout after they were sued following the largest ever U.S. pet food recall in 2007.

Some of the companies have already paid out more than $8 million to people whose pets were sickened or killed after eating the contaminated food.

Thousands of other pet owners may be eligible for payments under the settlement deal, which allows for reimbursement of all reasonable expenditures including vet bills and burial or cremation costs. Pet owners may be able to ask for fair market value of their deceased pets if that is higher than the costs incurred.

Any funds leftover from the settlement will be donated to animal welfare groups.
