Santa Cruz Fire Expected to be Contained by Wednesday

The Santa Cruz fire that has ravaged a mountainous region in Northern California for nearly two days is expected to burn through the weekend and may not be contained until Wednesday of next week.

Known as the Summit Fires, more than 3,000 acres have been charred by the fast moving flames between Santa Cruz and Santa Clara. Nearly 1,400 homes have been evacuated and more than a dozen homes and buildings have already fallen victim to the blaze.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph have made fighting the blaze nearly impossible for the 500-plus firefighters attempting to contain it and now officials are estimating that nearly 15 square miles will be burned before relief comes.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency for Santa Cruz County. Despite the massive destruction there have been no reports of injuries caused by the blaze.
