Texas Appeals Ruling on Polygamist Sect

An appeal has been filed with the state Supreme Court over a lower court ruling that Texas had no right to remove children from a polygamist sect ranch.

After the Texas 3rd District Court of Appeals ruling Thursday, it appeared that more than 400 children would be returned to their mothers.

An appeal of that ruling filed today will delay any reunion. The state Department of Family and Protective Services appealed Thursday’s decision claiming the lower court overstepped its bounds.

The child protective services agency defended its decision to raid the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saint’s ranch in Eldorado, saying in a statement, “When we see evidence that children have been sexually abused and remain at risk of further abuse, we will act.”
