Mars Landing Expected Sunday

NASA is preparing for a Mars landing of the Phoenix spacecraft on Sunday. The mission kicked into high gear Thursday as the Phoenix approached the Martian atmosphere.

Launched nearly 10 months ago, the spacecraft has journeyed across 422 million miles.

Phoenix’s  touchdown Sunday near the north pole of Mars will be the first powered landing attempt since the crash of the Mars Polar Lander in 1999.

NASA is said to be cautiously optimistic about the Phoenix landing, which will be broadcast live via webcast and on NASA TV. The Science Channel will also offer live coverage from 7:00-9:00 p.m. EDT.
